Thursday, November 15th, 8pm

kaleidoskop will be opening on Thursday to show the video installation SYNAPTIC SPACE for a last time.

Stop by and check it out and have a drink (wine and pastis will be there in the plentyful)

About the installation:
The Dutch-American visual artist and designer, Natalie van Sasse van Ysselt, is presenting the video installation "Synaptic Space", which investigates the visual processing and interpretation of memory.

Our memory is an entity so ephemeral yet so profound, which shapes us to our very core. How much do we hold onto, how much do we leave behind, or reinvent?

The gallery space has been transformed. A network of lines, physically connecting points in the room, become spatial synapses, creating the webbed world we harvest in our head: the intertwining structure which is the make-up of our personalities, fears, expectations and ambitions.

The web becomes the projection surface for our internal images, woven closely to see what is depicted, yet open enough to let certain details slip through the cracks.

Opening: Friday, September 21, 7pm
Exhibition: September 21-27
Opening hours: 6:30-9:30 pm, closed on Sunday

This video installation exhibition with mapped projections and score will be streamed live to Ireland and Iceland on the night of the opening.

More info below:

This exhibition is a collaborative work by artists Edel O’ Reilly and Paul Harrington. This work engages with the ontological significance of technologies immersion in our everyday lives focusing on issues of network culture, isolation, repression, projection, voyeurism and control.

For this project, Harrington & O’Reilly will transform Kaleidoskop gallery space into an immersive mise-en-scène using constructed sets and video mapped projections creating a space where the audience are at once both viewer and participant either engaging or challenging the focus of the gaze.

Through the deconstruction of multiple cultural texts including literary and philosophical references from the works of Beckett, Heidegger and Nietzsche this installation questions the relationship between technology and humanity and the conflicting dichotomy of isolation and withdrawal through engaging with performance and simulated or architectured pseudo-realities such as gaming and social media platforms.
This work seeks to create a narrative that questions the philosophical and ethical issues that technology raises, namely, the elimination of borders between art and life, virtual and embodied spectatorship.

Artists Harrington and O’ Reilly are multi disciplinary artists and work in installation, sculpture, video and sound. They have exhibited internationally in Canada, Netherlands, China, Ireland and the UK. Their most recent collaborative project was as artists in residence at Only Connect Exploratory Lab led by avant-garde theatre director Joao Garcia Miguel, and visual and sonic artists Rui Gato and Andre Sier. Here they began a new line of research into adapting poetic, literary and philosophical texts through performance and intuitive interactive experiences, deconstructing sensory experience in visual and sonic art, performative and public contexts.

Indexes and other figures’ is an exhibition merging photography, video and installation art
Project ‘indexes and other figures’ is an indefinite place where unnamed representation is a dominant factor.

In visual arts the process of interpretation is strongly linked with the relation built by the artist and his constructed object/image. The moment of looking is predominated by the fixed and given context, which makes the informality and freedom of seeing impossible.

By stimulating the abstract thinking the process of interpretation is becoming more interpersonal – the audience is facing the situation when visual arts are under the influence of constant change (context wise) drawing the attention to its polysemous character. What is named and definite is being replaces by an open work challenging the one who is looking.

RE-EVALUATION - EVOLUTION - INVITATION

After 2,5 years of running kaleidoskop by myself, I have decided to return to the original idea I founded this space with: a place to show your work but also to create.

Sine the beginning of June, kaleidoskop has divided its rooms into a project/exhibition space but also into studios.
I look forward to sharing kaleidoskop with Adela Holmes, Alicia Kersting, Beatriz Lobo and Carl (the cutest studio dog with a great personality) and to the new energy here in the Boddinstrasse 7.

kaleidoskop is still welcoming other artists, musicians and designers to come and share their ideas, collaborate or show their work.

Consider "48 Stunden Neukölln" a housewarming party to this new situation. Come and see the new makeover we have given the space, as well as an introduction into our work.

There will be drinks and art and hopefully you!

Natalie

Opening hours for 48 Stunden Neukölln: Friday 19:00-23:00, Saturday 18:00-23:00, Sunday 16:00-19:00

GROWING IN LIGHTNESS
SABRINA CASADEI and GIULIO ZANET
Texts by Rossella Farinotti, Carolina Lio

OPENING: May 05 | 7pm
EXHIBITION: May 05 – May 18
Opening hours: Tues 2-7pm and Fri 7-10pm

Sabrina Casadei and Giulio Zanet are showing a new project in Berlin with a comparison and collaboration between each other in a new space, in a new city. This collaborative exhibition was inspired by „Invisible Cities“ written by the Italian novelist Italo Calvino.

Growing in Lightness is an investigation of the idea of a „voyage“, of the spirit and of the two Italian artists working together in a foreign city. Growing in Lightness is also a mental journey through new ideas and new ways of explaining each other together. Casadei and Zanet are
stimulated by the context of a gallery and are adapting their thoughts and artistic practice–
a different approach to their usual way of creation.
In this exhibition, Zanet is also leaving his usual two-dimensional medium and building a kind of tent. Casadei communicates with this idea of „nest building“ by adding fluctuating drawings to the installation. The visitor is invited to view this installation in the gallery space but also to enter it and experience it from within.
The collaboration between these two painters, which also suggests approaches from a male and female perspective, shows intervention and cooperation. Both in the installation and exhibited
drawings and paintings, there is a first impression of lightness, but with a closer look, also an
impact of strength and torment.

„Journeys to relive your past? Journeys to recover your future?“ is a quote from „Invisible Cities“ which reveals a second level of meaning to Casadei‘s strong approach to color and material and Zanet‘s clean, pure drawings as well as their collaborative installation.

Exhibition: 30.03.2012 – 29.04.2012
Exhibition opening hours: Tues. 14-19/Fri. 19-22

The exhibition is in transition during the duration of the show. A new installation will be shown during Gallery Weekend.

Gallery Weekend (April 27-29) opening hours: Fri. 19-22 / Sat. & Sun. 17-22

Braam’s work investigates our experience of time and space, the construction of our environment and our perception of this reality.

Reoccurring themes in his work are the tension between man and nature and the social issues that coincide with this. Our evolutionary process, that was originally a natural one, has become an almost completely uncontrollable human technological evolution.
You often see reoccurring mathematical structures and systems. These situations create both an intensity and complexity, but at the same time, are beautifully bright.

Bram Braam is a Dutch artist based in Berlin. Besides actively exhibiting in Germany and the Netherlands, he recently won the Jung Art Prize in Berlin.

The next Ecke Gallery meeting - n° 10 - will be hosted in kaleidoskop on 20th November- starting at 4 pm.

The workshop will introduce the links between art and neuroscience whilst taking advantage of the current kaleidoskop exhibition "MIND the Gap" which in two connected rooms explores the tendencies of the right and left side of the brain through a variety of artistic practices.

Framework of the meeting will include:

A short introduction on the topic presented by Giovanni Casu.
Then small work-groups ( 2-4 participants) will be created to permit a creative and effective collaboration between artists and neuroscientists, linguists, psychologists, philosophers and more.
Each group will work between now and February on a specific topic related to neuroscience to create a "piece of art" that will be presented at an exhibition in Ecke Gallery in February 2012

If you are interested in participating or collaborate please email info@kaleidoskop-art.com:
1) Your name
2) Your Field (artist, linguist etc..)
3) Web site (if possible)

and choose 4 of the following "neuroscience" topics-
(This will assist in creating the groups - during next meeting there will be the opportunity to redefine it and integrate it.)

TOPICS: consciousness, visual perception, phenomenology, language, hard problem in neuroscience, memory, pain, time perception, body perception, movement, melancholia, proprioception, epigenetic, qualia, moral judgment, compassion, emotions, schizophrenia, conceptual structures.

Feel free to suggest more topics -

PHANTASMAGORIA is everywhere: it composes the collective imagery that accompanies capitalism since the 19th Century.
Whether in the 20th century World Exhibitions or in current shopping malls, phantasmagoria is a transfiguration of merchandise into poetry without visible indication of its ambiguous social utility, of the troubled history of its production or of its class-struggle-related price.
The conference Phantasmagorical Berlin, before and after the fall of the wall has invited Berlin-based, international artists to visualize their thoughts on the phantasmagorias found in the past and present.

kaleidoskop presents three emerging photographers who are reinterpreting the art of staged photography, focusing on the
re-presentation of reality in cinematic narration.
Their work reveals what is behind the phantasmagoric structures created by our supersaturated new-media society and examines the foundations of our emotional realities.
All three artists were master class students of James Higginson, Fine-Artist and mentor at Avonbiehl -Studio for Photography and Video.

Pre-/De- Form Me takes form by exhibiting nine European artists. The eclectic variety of works comes together under the theme of the exhibition: individual deformation to society. As the title suggests,
questions concerning oneself arise. Are we preformed? To what degree do we deform? Which factors shape me? Each artist represents different aspects of the spectrum, from questioning the existence of an origin to the different processes we undergo to reach our current state of being.
From site-specific to sculpture to anatomical materials, each method of depiction is the translation of a personal form, process or state.

Between January 28 and February 06, the interplay of artwork and visitor will create and shape the state of Pre-/De- Form Me, as an exhibition, observation and study of social and personal interaction.

They create a hybrid using photography, painting and writing; transforming
affirmations into questions without fearing what one doesn‘t know.
